Uvena Atana showed up in Freedom Falls, breaking into the Miner's Respite to take shelter from mercenaries attacking her. She wanted answers about the attempt on her daughter's life, and she had a lead to follow. They attacked the base on Aroste and captured Jelvan Darennon, but had to let him go after repeated attacks.

Despite the end of the attacks, Va'ynna Atana is not out of the water yet. The question remains whether there is a connection between this and her more recent problems.

Summary

Respite Shootout

It was a normal day at the Respite in the beginning of August when a shootout broke out outside. None of the participants in this conflict were inside the Respite, but one of them had taken cover and the building itself did take a few rounds.

Steve Briggs was handling security that day, but the security cameras did not have good enough coverage for him to get a full overview of the situation. Other Redrock Agency personnel that were present but off-duty did know the numbers and they could see two of them fighting an unknown third that were still out of view.

Steve ordered everyone to get upstairs and out of sight, which most complied to, and so far nobody inside had been injured. One of the attackers – human woman – were hit, and retreated and took cover across the street. The other one, an asari, kept pressing on however. Their target – an asari – was then briefly seen on the other wall, but not reacted to until Aylena reports that she has broken into the garage.

Steve and Vaden hurry to the garage, but the asari is far too injured to work. The asari attacker wasn't far behind, but she was not hard to dissuade when her colleague was screaming at her to leave and the ten thousand they were offered for the job was not worth fighting two on one. That left their target, who was bleeding on the garage floor. She explained that she had stolen datapads from an asari investigator who was sitting on the intel and doing nothing about it, but their security systems on them caused most of the data to be lost.

The Respite sustained minimal damages, but Aylena demanded forty thousand credits from the injured asari for it which she was in no position to dispute.

She was then led out, but not before exchanging a few words with Steve about who she was here for and the possible connection to Rellis Darennon. The shooting had ceased and the Miner's Respite was starting to operate normally again. Steve advised her to go to Redrock Agency with what she knew, as they would be interested in this information.

Uvena Atana

Uvena went to Redrock HQ a few days after the incident at the Miner's Respite, She did not call ahead, so her arrival was a surprise to Jason Wolfe and Linda Vasquez who were in the middle of a meeting about a medical expense at the time.

She also tried to hire Redrock Agency without revealing her identity and stake in this, but she didn't keep the information to herself when it became clear that not disclosing it would have meant the job being dismissed. That's when Jason learned that Uvena were there to do right by her daughter, Va'ynna Atana, by finding out why T'Vezan was supposed to carry out her order on her life.

Uvena stated many time how much it would be a disservice to Va'ynna to mention her being on the planet at all, but despite Vasquez' frustration he made it very clear that he was not to be dissuaded. Uvena was not happy about it, but it did not deter her from continuing the process to hire them for the job.

It took another few days before Vasquez could reach a decision and they agreed on a payment of 190,000 credits with the condition that Uvena will have to pay more should the intel not match reality. She then went on her way, but not without another argument with Jason about her daughter, but Vasquez interfered as it was about to heat up.

Trip to Aroste

Redrock Agency set off on the mission not long after the last meeting with Uvena. They did not give much notice to their employees, but still had an adequate turnout. This was Damien and Calyx' first mission, and the shuttle thrip there was their first chance to introduce themselves to their colleagues.

The banter between the crew eventually subsided, and the rest of the trip was uneventful until they entered Derrai airspace. The corporate town was quick to detect them on their scanners and contacted them for identification. Jason answered the call with a lie about a shuttle malfunction and requested permission to land nearby. They were granted that, but not without a fee of 5,000 credits.

While Jason paid the fee — with some encouragement from Derrai's AA guns —, the landing spot offered was nowhere near the mission site on Aroste. They were leaning on the shuttle malfunction lie, and after a lot of worse ideas, they decided to take their chances diving the shuttle under water. They needed to make it look like an accident and only slow down in the last minute, and that's what they did.

The underwater trip to Aroste was surprisingly uneventful. Them being underwater prevented the AA guns and radars from noticing them, and they could not be contacted by the tower. Calyx kept his faith in the military hardware the sat in. Jason and Victoria did not share his faith, which did not ease the others' concerns.

The Aroste tower contacted them upon resurfacing, and said that they were tagged as potentially hostile. It wasn't what they needed right now, but this tower granted them permission to land without requesting a landing fee. They knew about the dive from Derrai, and they were not going to fall for the same lie.

Damien managed to disrupt their sensors, and they were able to reach the mission site without any altercations. Their AA gun were trying to aim at them, but they could not get a consistent lock.

Aroste - Outside

They manage to set down in a field very close to he mission site. It was farmed land, but the nearest houses were 600 meters away and there were nobodoy working the fields at this time. A forest gave them cover to approach the base without immediate detection. Jattic stayed behind to guard the shuttle.

The locations had no windows on the wall facing them, nor any sign it ever had. There were mechs patrolling outside, however, so it was not going to be that easy to get in. Renala tried shutting the mechs down, but they were only inactive for a few seconds, and this caught the interest of a guard that was patrolling another part of the location. He did not spot them right away.

This was the moment they were going to risk losing the element of surprise, and thus Jason assigned positions and orders to the other in case it did. Plan A was to disable the mechs fast and force the turian to surrender. That did not work out for them, and two mechs still stood from the chain overload, and the turian ran to cover while trying to supprress them. They managed to take out the turian, but not before he confirmed the attack over comms to his team. The last two mechs proved no challenge to the well armed team.

It was clear then, but the Redrock team was quick to split up to get around the building in search for entrances. Jason, Victoria, Halisi, Philip and Damien headed north, while Renala, Calyx Vadris and Leah Mercier headed south.

The team rounded the building until they both reached a pair of doors; Jason's team on the eastern wall, the other on the southern wall. Since both team had a tech among them, they were both able to get past locked doors. Renala's team focused on one of the doors, while Victoria and Damien went off so their team could get in through both entrances.

Aroste - Inside

Renala's door lead to a long hallway spanning the entire length of the building – 40m. It appeared clear at first, but Calyx – who was taking point – was greeted by an incinireate drone and gunfire from an asari that had just poppet out of one of the doors along the hallway. Damien's door also lead into a hallway, but did not have a view of the asari mercenary.

Jason was the last to enter, and his door lead to a lobby with low tables and couches. A human in full armor greeted them there, and he aimed down. Damien and Victoria got to a doorway leading to the lobby and together they overwhelmed the one combatant and took her out of the fight with a severe burn wound. A turian popping out to open fire on Victoria drew their attention away, however.

Renala was locked out after the asari her team was fighting ordered someone named Teris to lock it, but the power being cut left her unable to bring it back open. That was also bad news for Leah and Calyx who were left without a known exit point. They were still fighting two on one, and they had their asari opponent on her back foot, and he was eventually subdued by Calyx forcefully disarming her.

Jason managed to get the woman they were fighting in the lobby to stand down and attempt convincing the others to do so as well. This Teris, however, was apparantly not convinced but she wasn't there. She told them Darennon's location, but also the fact that the door to it was unpowered and locked. Halisi then helped patch her up.

The turian who was in a standoff against Victoria and Damien was also not convinced. He said that Darennon agreed with the surrender, but that Teris had the final say while she was here. The resistance remained spread out as the team continued searching the rest of the floor. Two mechs in the conforence room, and one human male in the garage. Jason spotted an asari in the hallway to the roof access, but she was able to block pursuit with a singularity as she headed for the roof. Victoria sat on his arm until the surrender could be called by Jelvan Darennon.

Calyx was tasked with breaching the door to where they were told Darennon was hiding. It was a flimsy, worn door, so a breaching charge would suffice. He gave a warning to anyone inside as he did and set the charge. There was no verbal response to it, but footsteps confirmed that someone heard his warning. The explosives went off and it opened to a bedroom where Darennon was sitting, unharmed. He offered up no resistance.

The singularity droppsed in time for Jason to raise a weapon against the asari, as there was someone else on the roof shooting at her. She wasn't going to let herself be talked down, and went up the roof and fought back against the unknown third party.

Jason went after the asari up the ladder to the roof. He was injuried from the fighting so far and the sudden end of the singularity, but he could still hold his weapon. There were two asari on the roof, the closest being Teris, and they were by a Kodiak shuttle. Jason managed to land a few shots on Teris, but she managed to get into the shuttle and start it up. The other asari was not hostile, but Jason was not about to trust her and ordered her to get down.

Philip searched the last room in the corridor leading to the roof, which turned out to be a server room. There were also some medical equipment there, but most importantly, a young asari named Marissa. Philip took care of getting her to the shuttle while Damien dealt with extracting data from the computers.

They decided to take Darennon with them rather than dealing with him here. He agreed to leave on the condition that they leave the island for good — fulfilling his contract with the Derrai Security Group. They did, and he surrendered command to the turian that Victoria had been guarding

The asari that was fighting Teris was not given much heed as she awkwardly did as told and tried to pose no threat to the Redrock Team. She explained that their goals were similar, but that Redrock had gotten to them ahead of her. With a bit of a back and forth they went their separate ways.

Jelvan Darennon

Jelvan was brought into Redrock HQ immediately upon their arrival back at base, ushered by Leah and Jattic. Leah asked Vasquez what to do with him, and got the order to bring him to the unused office closest to the stairs before the chief hurried to the clinic to check on Jason's injury. The salarian complained at the rough treatment, but did not show any signs of planning an escape at the time.

Leah was the first guard to watch over him during his captivity, and asked him a few questions. Jelvan was not pleased to hear that this had to do with his brother Rellis Darennon, and he mentioned that while he knew it was trouble, he could not pass up his business proposal. He feared for his life should he answer any questions, especially since he didn't know why Redrock Agency was so eager to find out about him.

Vasquez took over for Leah after returning from the clinic several hours later, and got what he has said so far summed up as that he's unwilling to give up the location of Rellis. She insisted that Rellis was going to give up this information. Jelvan offered a word of warning that Rellis is a dangerous, resoruceful enemy that Redrock Agency do not want. He also asked if Teris escaped, because that would mean they already are in trouble.

He then revealed that he did not know Rellis' location, or the true structure of the organization that they both were part of. Any resource he needed, he got, and such was the case with any orders received as well. The reaction was one of frustration and scepticism. It did not sound probable that Rellis didn't even know where his own brother was.

Vasquez stepped away to inspect the datapad that Damien Monroe had brought back from the mission, but it did not have more than two pieces of unencrypted information on it. One was about moving Prerix Falten and Sarian T'Dera to a small security outfit in Linissa, and the other was presumably about the child they recovered:

I did the tests. This one's a negative, so keep looking. Dispose of her when you're done dealing with the intruders. And don't snatch them from council space worlds from now on; too many regulations for one of these to slip through the cracks. I'm out of here. –Teris

Jelvan kept insisting that he did not know of his brother's location, nor what was being tested in the asari prisoner. Marissa was brought in there by another team and they were told to keep her secure until further others were received, according to him. He wasn't believed this time either, and they left him in there to reconsider what he knew.

Marissa T'Evin

While the course of action was clear for what to do with the salarian, the options for dealing with Marissa T'Evin was not as obvious. Philip and Renala were the first to take responsibility for looking after her. The early plan was to contact Armali authorities and work something out from there, but Renala feared they could get in trouble that way. They also considered asking the client.

First of all they needed to get her somewhere to sleep and eat, and they opted for the Miner's Respite. Aylena did not ask payment for the room and food the first day after learning what was going on with the child; she was first confused why Philip was asking for a room just for her.

Marissa didn't talk much during her stay in Freedom Falls. Renala didn't want to know what they were doing with her, and urged Philip to avoid prying as well. It's was the authorities' responsibility to investigate this, after all. A relative of hers showed up to pick her up a few days later, which others in Redrock Agency only heard about when Renala larmented the rescuer's interesting way of saying thank you.

Ilyna T'Rea explained later to Jason after his hospital stay ended that she had also played a part in this. She went to Aite three days earlier than originally planned to confirm that Marissa was here after her family had received an anonymous tip. The relative of Marissa that attacked Renala was one of her friends from the military, Illeya T'Evin. Ilyna also confirmed that Marissa was safely back in Armali with her family.

First Retaliation

Jelvan Darennon was kept in Redrock HQ for a few more days without giving them any more useful information, and then time ran out. A meeting between Vasquez and Renala was interrupted by a shuttle hovering outside loudly demanding the salarian's release. The two of them were the only ones in the building, and reinforcements would take time. Vasquez was trying on some new gear at the time, and was prepared for a fight.

Renala was told to cover the door while Vasquez headed for the second floor. She tried getting a few answers over the comms channel provided by the attackers, but they were not interested in talking and instead threatened to tear through the building to get him. Vasquez tried taking down the shuttle from a window on the second floor, but the shields and the pilot's maneuvering kept them in the air.

On the ground floor, Renala was doing her best ot keep them from breaching the building. She locked all doors after breaking into Vasquez' terminal, and then cut the power on all exterior doors once it became apparent that the enemy had techs that could get through the electronic locks. They managed to open the front door slightly before the power was cut, however, and a grenade thrown into the room disarmed and injured Renala.
