Founded by salarian marine biologists in 2132, Derrai is a city on the coast quite far north on Aite. It was in an effort to map out the various marine species in the region and their value for food export to other Terminus worlds. While it has little mineral resources of value, it's been the center of some conflicts due to the discovery that some common marine species in the area were proven safely edible for asari, salarians, and batarians – and humans.
It has no central government, but the corporations having stakes in the area and surrounding areas are the closest thing to one. The private army shared between the major corporations does keep the peace and are ready for an attack from the nearby states, but they are not a full police force. They do chase off or kill criminals who do not contribute to the society there, and people know it. That keeps the unemployment rates at 2.3% (figure excludes people supported by another's income and non-permanent residents)
For a place that's been around for over fifty years, its permanent population is only 5,000 due to few staying there long without a job. Salarians and asari make make up 80% of the population, while humans are only at 5%. Turians are a rare sight, and thus, any dextro food has to be bought from other states. The weather for most of the year is rather cold, and storm-level winds are common during the late autumn and winter, which doesn’t serve the place's popularity well. While residents have come to deal with it, most of the few tourists that visit stick to the better half of the year.
In 2173, they merged with two other nearby salarian states, the island of Aroste (formed in 2152, population: 900) and the state of Raelos (formed in 2159, population: 4,600) inland to the southwest; making the Derrai Union. The private security organizations saw a merge soon after, making the Derrai Security Group. Smaller actors in that field tend to be affiliated with the group and take missions for them, but they are not protected by DSG in matters that only concern them.
Tourists seeking to go there may schedule a landing ahead of time, with the fee being 500 credits. If they decide to do so as they approach Derraian airspace, the fee is tenfold. Public shuttles handle that. There are ports for shuttles on all three states in the Union, but only the two on the mainland has ports with higher capacity for larger ships. Landing anything larger than a sky-car truck outside these ports is illegal (except for DSG) without the right paperwork.
Fishing is a large industry there, and they have a firm control over large parts of the waters off the coast, and they're willing to show their teeth should an unauthorized fishing vessel ever find itself within the vague sea borders. Before the merge with Aroste, their sea borders were a cause of much dispute as well. Now in 2185, they account for 41% of all fish exported to the rest of Aite and 70% of fish exported off-world.
