The Syranis Foundation is an organization focused on research and humanitarian endeavors, as well as the governance of Freedom Falls.

History

Early Activities

The Syranis Foundation was founded in the 21st century by Matriarch Syranis for the purpose of facilitating her various endeavors and uniting her followers and students under a single organization. Since it's creation the Foundation's purpose has been primarily scientific and humanitarian, engaging in various research and charity endeavors across the galaxy, leveraging Syranis' wealth and political connections. One of their early projects, still active to this day, is the vorcha worker program. A number of vorcha orphans were raised and educated by the Foundation and subsequently offered employment. Most chose to take the offer, and their descendants make up a significant portion of the Foundation's employees.

Aite

The focus of the Syranis Foundation would be forever altered with the discovery of Aite at the start of the 22nd century. The unique situation of the doomed garden world drew the Matriarch's interest, and the Foundation was part of the initial colonization wave of 2104, founding the research outpost of Valarmi on the bank of the Epimedes River, overlooking the Dagessa Wetlands. The goal of the researchers was to catalogue and study as much of the planet and its native flora and fauna as possible. Syranis personally oversaw these early efforts, and found herself falling in love with the world of Aite. Preserving knowledge of Aite for future generations soon became the Foundation's primary project, and Valarmi grew as their efforts expanded, a diverse settlement springing up to support the scientists. The Citadel Council's abandonment of Aite in 2133 was a major setback for Syranis and her people, but as other research ventures across the planet collapsed or packed up their bags and left, the Foundation remained committed. Their role would change in the tumultuous decades that followed, coming to act as the de-facto government of a town that was receiving more refugees by the day - people that wanted stability, but refused to, or were unable to, return to Council Space.

A Violent World

In 2149, the tenuous situation in Valarmi came to a head as the growing settlement, an increasingly juicy target, was hit hard by a local warlord that had sprung up in the wake of Aite's independence. The invasion was repelled, but at the cost of many lives and the destruction of much of the town. It had become woefully clear that the Syranis Foundation's small security force was insufficient to keep the growing settlement safe, and with the losses they had taken, the situation was acute. Knowing that something needed to be done, Matriarch Syranis organized the creation of a town militia, bringing in off-world consultants to train volunteers, while letting the Foundation's private security force serve as a core of professionals. Rumor has it that during the reconstruction of Valarmi, the Matriarch also oversaw the installation of concealed defenses in the event of another invasion, but the extent to which this is true remains a mystery to the public. Some believe it is merely a rumor started by the Foundation to deter attackers without investing in actual defenses. Regardless of the truth, stability and normalcy slowly returned to Valarmi.

Freedom Falls

With the end of the First Contact War in 2163, a new era would dawn on Aite, and by extension, the Syranis Foundation. In the early days of humanity's colonial rush settlers streamed to Aite, undeterred by its lack of Council membership. Human corporations saw an untapped gold mine waiting to be stripped before Litae's descent. Some of these corporations set up in Valarmi, and the human population quickly boomed, to the point where the town was soon known mostly by its human name of Freedom Falls. The Matriarch and her foundation took these developments in stride, welcoming their new citizens and the growth of their town, which was gaining a reputation as a safe haven on a violent and chaotic world. The new income was leveraged to provide expanded town services and a larger spaceport, bringing in even more settlers and cementing the Syranis Foundation's place as the government of Freedom Falls. The new infrastructure also enabled the Matriarch to finally begin the pinnacle of her Foundation's work on Aite, the plans for which had been worked on for decades. In collaboration with the University of Serrice and support from many of the Matriarch's corporate and political contacts, construction begun on The Last Resort, a hardened research facility meant to document Litae's impact with Aite, an unprecedented scientific endeavor. The construction was kept secret for safety reasons, as the amount of advanced technology involved would mean a juicy target for Aite's more unsavory elements.

Sabbatical

For two decades the Foundation's work continued and Freedom Falls grew, but in 2180 Matriarch Syranis departed for what ended up being a 5 year sabbatical on Thessia, catching up on galactic developments, meeting with various associates, supplicants and luminaries, and, of course, spending time with some of the many members of her extended family that she had not had the opportunity to see for decades. During her absence the Foundation's work did not pause, but it did stagnate to a degree, and the Matriarch's return in 2185 was much welcomed by the Syranis Foundation and most of Freedom Falls' longtime inhabitants who were familiar with what she had down for the town. Some newer arrivals were less pleased with the Foundation's renewed involvement in local affairs, particularly those that had benefited from the lack of oversight - rumors abound of corruption in the militia that needs to be rooted out, and of condemned activities such as slave smuggling occurring within the town limits. Under the leadership of Matriarch Syranis, the Foundation has set out to address these issues and renew public faith in their efforts. The first stage in this was the construction of Athame's Embrace Medical Center to replace the old Foundation clinic. While not up to Council Space standards, it offers the best medical care on Aite outside of private corporate facilities.
