"But you're sweet, shy, and quite possibly the least dangerous person within a fifty mile radius. The last place I'd expect to find you is serving drinks in a bar out here in the Terminus." |
—Jason Wolfe |
Va'ynna is an asari maiden working at the Miner's Respite, where she has learned enough to do almost all the day-to-day work under their roof. She lives with Victoria and is walked to work every day by either her or Uvena after the incident in October 2185.

Appearance
The first thing that sticks about is her tall, slender build; she stands at 184cm (6' ½"). She has a intense purple skin color and sports only very faint green markings: two short green rays on the brows, just above the eyes. Her crests are well-kept, and has a smooth texture of a color matching the rest of her head. Regarding her clothing, she prefers a casual dress when she can, or a simple outfit if work/weather demands it; either way, she dresses modestly.
History
Old Life
Va'ynna grew up on Sanves, and had a quite normal childhood, if a bit on the less social side. She was raised only by her mother, and never heard anything about her father. Other than that, there's not much to say about it. She did above average in education, but has no finished tertiary education. Her mother wasn't a 'mother of the year' by a long shot, and the two hasn't spoken together for decades.
She's never really stayed with the same job for long, especially when social interaction was a vital part of it; even retail. While boring, she's been content with menial jobs that are out of sight, like organizing storage where machines to do so are impractical.
New Life
She eventually grew bored of the old life, and wanted to travel and see the galaxy like so many maidens do. She has been sparse on the details of her trip, but she went via Illium and arrived alone late at night. It's hard to imagine her doing that now, but back then she was quite different, and less unsure of herself.
Her first night at the Miner's Respite is one she remembers well, even if it left no lasting impact. She met another asari that had noticed her when she entered the bar, and talked with her for a few minutes. She was even offered a strong drink, but she did not have more than a sip of it before coughing and leaving it alone. The conversation ended abrupt when Va'ynna returned a question, and the asari stormed out instead of answering her. She never saw this person again.
Thankfully the company she met later on weren't all that bad. Meeting Jason is the one she remembers best due to him being her guide to Freedom Falls in the beginning. She also met Zaylus Velrin, who showed an interest for her, but she was also never truly comfortable around him.
Respite
Jason had offered Va'ynna to check if he could fit her in at Redrock Agency, but she was a bit hesitant to work with mercenaries. She ended up working for the Miner's Respite in the end; however, being hired shortly after the change of ownership that occurred in November of 2184. Zaylus was a bit negative towards her job choice, but Jason had often encouraged her to ask for a job there.
Va'ynna settled into the job quite well, but would later start to train to work in the kitchen to be less out front as the asari was not as adept at interacting with people. They were out in the terminus systems where regulations are light, and they weren't making very advanced food, so it did not take her long to be considered qualified enough by Aylena.
She further expanded her repertoire of experience under the roof of the Respite from inventory keeping to housekeeping, and as the Respite grew more thinly staffed over the next year, that became increasingly useful. The only complaint she had was the long hours with only a break in the middle of the afternoon, but Va'ynna did not fight hard against it.
She had found her place, and she felt useful.
Target
Eventually, trouble would find her too. She was working at the Respite when an asari got up from her booth and raised a weapon against Va'ynna with the intent to shoot rather than to make demands. The shot went wide when a salarian that had tried to ambush her tried to make a move at the same time.
When the dust settled, and the troublemakers were sent on their way, Va'ynna was left without any answers. Was she just an arbitrary target at the wrong place at the wrong time, or was there more to this? Either way, this was the first time Va'ynna felt truly unsafe in Freedom Falls and it would take some time for her to gather up enough courage to start leaving it on her own.
Uvena
Va'ynna was unwilling to speak about her mother back when Jason pried about family early on, but it wasn't until she showed up in Freedom Falls that she would even talk about her. Uvena had given up on her forty years before. Uvena had wished to remain unknown to Va'ynna during her time here, but Jason was not going to respect that request. Va'ynna was shocked when she heard that the asari that had been hurt in the fighting around the Respite the night before was her.
When Va'ynna was in the hospital for gunshot injuries sustained, Uvena finally decided to show up. Va'ynna did not even let her get a word out before telling her to leave again, and knowing Va'ynna, that level of anger must have had a good reason. She mentioned it to Jason after being discharged, and he kept urging her to heat her out.
She could not sleep that night, and showed up once more at the bar, waiting for Uvena to pick her up. She has been sparse on the details of their conversation that night, but things have only gotten better between them with time. Va'ynna still refers to her by her first name rather than as her mother, however.
Victoria
"I have lost count of how many times I've rejected her, but she never gave up, and was always nice to me." |
—Va'ynna Atana |
Va'ynna and Victoria's relationship was an unlikely one, and it started on the wrong foot when Victoria showed up during one of the days after the incident at the Respite in late January. Victoria came off too strong initially, but Va'ynna did not chase her away; in her state, she welcomed having someone to talk with. Any physical contact attempted by Victoria was met with clear signs of discomfort.
Despite the rocky beginnings, the two became friends over the next few months, but Va'ynna did not go along with any of Victoria's attempts at making it something more. Eventually, Va'ynna would start to feel bad about it, like she's taking advantage of Victoria for keeping things like they are. It culminated with Va'ynna telling her as much when Victoria visited the hospital after the incident at the Respite that coincided with the spaceport attack.
It was Victoria being gone for Redrock's expedition to Di Yu that made her realize her feelings. She ended up bothering Renala about the whereabouts more than daily. The night she was back, Va'ynna went to her room and talked it out. After a tear-filled conversation, Va'ynna went back to her room to change into her nightdress, and so began their relationship.
Things have been stable since then, with little to challenge their relationship; though Va'ynna often expressed concerns about not knowing where Victoria's boundaries were, she got comfortable in no time. Especially after they moved together into an apartment about ten minutes' walk from Miner's Respite.
Kidnapping
See: Skipping Work for event details.
Va'ynna would eventually feel safe enough to go out on her own, especially for the brief walk between the apartment and work. She'd prefer the company, of course, but some days both Victoria and Uvena were busy. This was one of those days, and she got about halfway there before she was surrounded and forced into a sky car. Her omni-tool was thrown away while trying to call for help, breaking it. To make matters worse, one of the kidnappers threw away most of her clothes in case they contained any trackers.
It would take a very long morning before Redrock eventually came knocking down doors and finding her, and she was brought back to Redrock HQ for treatment. She ended up staying there for a while. She was very alone in the weeks afterward, with Victoria going off on her first shipping mission and most of the others she knew being away on another mission. She did spend some time with Li, however, and even looked after her for a few days along with Uvena when Ilyna went with the chief after the Rakhana mission had gone over time.
She had not dared walk outside on her own, however, but she has recovered in other ways since that happened.
Holidays
Va'ynna still worked out at the bar sometimes, so she started to overhear a lot of chatter about Christmas once advent began and took interest in it rather quickly. She had a lot of humans in her social circle, so she was like a sponge to it. Despite that, she failed to understand how central the gift-giving was to it, as she had taken more of an interest in the culinary and decorative side of it.
She spent Christmas Eve with her and Victoria's closest family, except for a small trip to Redrock HQ to exchange gifts. Then they went back and ate until well past satiety, which is another crucial part of the holiday, and exchanged their gifts.
Skills
Biotics
Va'ynna has some formal training in biotics, but nothing coming anywhere close to combat training. To make matters worse, the asari is not able to tackle the stress of a situation where defensive or offensive biotics would prove useful.
That's not to say that her biotics are useless; her telekinetic fields are able to lift objects weighing up to 80kg (175lbs) on a good day. If she can use her hands to guide the lifted object and it – or worse, they – can take a few bumps, the weight limit may go above 180kg (400lbs). This is the only kind of biotics of hers that sees regular practice because most deliveries to the Miner's Respite is her responsibility.
The asari has some basic knowledge of barriers and stasis fields, but they take a lot out of her to execute and fall apart far too quickly to be useful.
Weapons
As for weapons, the asari can technically use a pistol. Before going to Aite, she bought a cheap civilian-grade Predator pistol. She has since disposed of it after a traumatic experience, not wanting to keep a weapon in her room.
Trivia
- Originally, Va'ynna was going to be a second iteration of Aeyna. When Ilyna was introduced, I made a carefully considered decision to change her background while remaining consistent with past RP.
