On the cold winter morning of October 22, 2185, Va'ynna did not show up for work. When she was half an hour late without answering calls, Aylena contacted Victoria to ask if Va'ynna was home. With nobody knowing where she went, Victoria's search began.

Retreading Her Path

Victoria started her search by calling Uvena Atana, who was currently busy meeting someone about renting an apartment. Uvena was equally surprised to hear Va'ynna was absent. Calling Va'ynna did not work, with the first call simply timing out without being picked up.

Va'ynna has a usual path to work that takes her along the wide the northern edge of the main commercial zone, and Victoria has walked her to work often enough to know it. That was the logical starting point for her search. There was nothing to see until Victoria passed a convenience store. Unbeknownst to her, she stepped on a piece of plastic just outside which later would turn out to be a piece of Va'ynna's omni-tool.

Before she could move on, she met an asari who was out to buy breakfast due to the Respite's kitchen being closed this morning. She did know who Va'ynna is, but regrettably had nothing that could help. The asari was willing to notify her if she saw her, but she did not offer to go out of her way to search for her.

After that, Victoria continued on her way to the Miner's Respite to check if Va'ynna has turned up yet. She met Aylena, who had no new information for her. Victoria was running out of options and expressed that she could not do this alone anymore. Uvena did not make any progress either, due to her taxi taking too long to show up.

Getting Help

Uvena hailed a taxi and got to Redrock HQ, but it had been an hour since the disappearance by the time she got there. Only Sioria and Jason were present, and Uvena was quick to inform them about what had happened. Jason tried to find an alternative explanation at first, but telling Uvena not to worry was not going to happen, and he eventually sprung into action.

They weighed their options and decided on two next steps to evaluate: Get Renala to try tracking down her omni-tool and searching for witnesses during Va'ynna's usual route to work. Victoria had contacted her crew, but without a clear direction, their search was fruitless.

Footage

Jason had Mendez go out to assist Victoria in the field, and together they started checking Va'ynna's usual path to work. They started with a convenience store around the middle of the route and went inside to ask if the employee behind the counter had seen or heard anything. She had heard some sounds of a scuffle and did agree to check the security camera.

The camera had a poor view of the street outside, but the footage did show an armored batarian outside of the store at the time, that the omni-tool was tossed out and that the sky car had a dark green color. It also showed a salarian coming along thirty minutes later to pick up the omni-tool, but they did not investigate that further at the time.

Mendez suspected the batarian's hardsuit as belonging to the security company that Renala encountered when trying to recover Uvena's car: Avoren Security. Jason asked Renala to dig up some information on them, but she did not see any way to confirm this, let alone prove it with their footage.

The car rental company had called off their deal with Avoren, but if they were behind this, then that company must have been involved too. That was what they thought, but Sioria going down there gained her no new insights into the company.

Jason reached out to Avoren Security's contact address and got no immediate help. He gave them thirty minutes to provide a meeting with Taro Avoren, but he ran out the clock on that without getting back to him. The contact person did hint that three active operators assigned to the debt collection had not reported, but could not provide any more information.

Assault on Avoren Security

Everyone started to gear up when it was becoming clear that negotiation had failed, and gathered in the meeting room for a briefing once the clock had run out. Linda had cleared the operation with Linissa's authorities, who asked only that fighting do not spill their way. The briefing did not involve anyone people that haven't been involved so far (see Redrock Agency's list above).

Avoren Security knew they were coming, and Redrock had little knowledge of their location beyond that it wasn't amenable to a concealed approach. They had no choice, though, so they decided to go in loud and fast.

When they approached the landing site, Jason was contacted by Irelia again, who was willing to order a surrender if they could bring down Taro who she believes is working on something on the side. She also warned them about rocket launchers, and Sioria spotted someone climbing up on the roof shortly after that.

Sioria managed to take out the two turians on the roof that were trying to attack the shuttle with rocket launchers, and Mendez attacked the room where Taro was hiding in, quickly killing the salarian along with Victoria. Irelia kept her word and gathered the remaining people into another room where they locked themselves in. Jason offered them to send someone to check on the turians on the roof, which they accepted.

Jason spoke with Irelia and a batarian later on and received the name and contact information for one of the rogue employees. They promised to stay out of Freedom Falls, but the asari did not agree with Jason's assessment of what they were doing, claiming that people like her are the closest one could get to insurance.

Renala was more fruitful in her search, and she found evidence of Taro's involvement in this and a means of getting to her. She sent the message over to Jason, and with it, he gathered the team to head out.

Confrontation

Getting to the location went according to plan, and they answered with coordinates once Renala broadcasted a signed beacon at the agreed-upon location. That lead them to an abandoned house in a snowed-down forest clearing, with the half still standing boarded up too well to gain any insights of the three that could be within.

Uvena and Victoria went in through a hole in the roof, Jason and Renala breached two sides of the hallway, Sioria kept overwatch from the nearby treeline, and Mendez stood guard by the shuttle. Only two of the three were present when they breached, and they overwhelmed them quickly. They did not surrender and were taken out by Jason and Renala.

The third, the asari that Victoria had met earlier that morning, arrived at the scene later. She did not seem to have noticed the Redrock shuttle and walked right into a pointed gun. That was around the same time they searched the second room in the hallway where they found Va'ynna on the floor. Her clothes had been discarded on the car trip here, and the breached windows meant she had to be secured quickly.

Jason managed to get the name Sala Piros from the asari, but she did not claim to know anything more about her than asking for Va'ynna by name. Victoria stepped away from helping Va'ynna to go out and enact revenge, shooting her in the legs twice. Jason disapproved strongly of it but did not let Victoria walk away from it right afterward. Victoria tried then to shoot her in the head, which failed, and the asari then started to use Jason's words against her. Mendez did take issue with that and threatened her that killing her would be upholding Redrock's reputation by preventing her from hurting anyone else.

They did not have time to stand around, so Renala gathered the omni-tools of the three mercenaries, and they hurried Va'ynna over to the shuttle. Then, they got out of there and brought her to Redrock's office. Halisi was contacted, but she was not at Redrock HQ.

Safety

Va'ynna was brought to the couch in the rec room at Redrock HQ while they waited for Halisi to show up. That did not take long, and she was quick to scan and advise on treatment. Va'ynna had only suffered mild hypothermia, so rest and nutrition were all she needed. She insisted that Jason wait until the asari was feeling better before going through what happened with her.

She got to study the six pictures on the screen that Renala had put up during the early morning's investigations, and she mentioned having seen the dark blue asari before at the Miner's Respite. She speculated that the salarian might be one of the mercenaries that took her coming back to grab her omni-tool, which turned out the false.

Omni-Tools

Renala's search for information was fruitless, as she expected, but she had an idea for using the contact address they had for Sala Piros to install a tracker on her omni-tool. Renala also suggested doing the same to recover Va'ynna's. In Sala's case, it would be far too risky and if detected, could lose them their only lead on her, so it was decided for now only to use this for Va'ynna's omni-tool.

The malicious message payload did its job, leading them to a gray apartment building in the eastern residential district; not far from the hospital. Jason and Oxaris went to the location to confront the omni-tool thief. It turned out to be the salarian from the morning's footage, a militiaman that claimed no involvement in this other than finding the omni-tool on the street and repairing it. He introduced himself as Kirev Emosa, and agreed to let Redrock know if he found out anything about Sala Piros.
